the benjamin franklin house announces a series of events

Dr Richard Horton

The Benjamin Franklin House asked me to share the news of its upcoming events which may be of interest to our UK readers.

The Benjamin Franklin House is the world’s only remaining Franklin home and  located just steps from London’s Trafalgar Square. It opened to the public for the first time on Franklin’s 300th birthday in 2006 and is setting a new standard for cultural heritage.  Britain’s Sunday Times recently called Benjamin Franklin House one of its “especially dynamic museum[s]” for its “state of the art show” which seamlessly blends drama and technology of which “Franklin, ever the innovator, would have approved.”

In September and October it is running two events in association with the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library.

On Wednesday September 3 at 6:30 pm, “Benjamin Franklin and the Globalisation of Science”. Dr Richard Horton (pictured here), editor of The Lancet, the number one global medical journal and winner of the 2007 Edinburgh Medal, addresses the connection between Benjamin Franklin and the Globalisation of Science.   Then on Wednesday October 29 at 7pm, you are welcome to join a US presidential debate. Featuring representatives from Republicans and Democrat Abroad, Sir Robert Worcester, founder of MORI will moderate.  Tickets for both events are £8 (£5 friends and concessions) and include a reception.

For more information and to book please contact the Benjamin Franklin House at +44 (0)207 839 6006 or info@benjaminfranklinhouse.org

Young people are a powerful voice with a key role to play in the promotion and protection of human rights.

In this podcast interview Sarah Atkinson, International Youth Coordinator for Amnesty International, talks about her recent visit to Hong Kong and the launch of the Asia Pacific Youth Network - a community connecting young people in the Asia Pacific who want to make change happen. This network is open to all individuals desiring social change; aiming to connect them to issues of interest and to open doors to new opportunities for action.

Sarah discusses the importance of social media to such a network and the human rights movement generally and underlines young people as valuable advocates for tolerance and peace. Looking ahead to the campaigns the network will be focusing their energies on, she sees that the scope for local and global engagement will not only include, but be driven by young people.

Lost Without Words

Around 250,000-300,000 people in the UK have a communication disability directly as a result of a stroke, the most common of which is called Aphasia. Although this equates to around one third of stroke survivors, there is little knowledge about these conditions and the availability of effective support.

Today The Stroke Association launches the Lost without Words campaign which seeks to highlight the impact that communication disability has on stroke survivors whilst lobbying for more long term support that can result in huge benefits.

The human impact of having a stroke related communication disability includes not only the loss of communication skills such as speaking, reading, writing, understanding language but also the loss of independence and confidence as well as an increased risk of isolation and depression and more pressure on carers.

Lost without words

We are encouraging everyone to get involved in the campaign, whether you are or have been directly affected by a communication disability, are related to someone who has experienced this, or just feel strongly about the issue.

Please go to www.stroke.org.uk/campaigns and use the online facility to email your local politician. You don’t have to know their name as the email will be directed straight to them and there is some suggested text to save you time. It really is as simple as clicking a few buttons to get involved the campaign.
