the benjamin franklin house announces a series of events

Dr Richard Horton

The Benjamin Franklin House asked me to share the news of its upcoming events which may be of interest to our UK readers.

The Benjamin Franklin House is the world’s only remaining Franklin home and  located just steps from London’s Trafalgar Square. It opened to the public for the first time on Franklin’s 300th birthday in 2006 and is setting a new standard for cultural heritage.  Britain’s Sunday Times recently called Benjamin Franklin House one of its “especially dynamic museum[s]” for its “state of the art show” which seamlessly blends drama and technology of which “Franklin, ever the innovator, would have approved.”

In September and October it is running two events in association with the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library.

On Wednesday September 3 at 6:30 pm, “Benjamin Franklin and the Globalisation of Science”. Dr Richard Horton (pictured here), editor of The Lancet, the number one global medical journal and winner of the 2007 Edinburgh Medal, addresses the connection between Benjamin Franklin and the Globalisation of Science.   Then on Wednesday October 29 at 7pm, you are welcome to join a US presidential debate. Featuring representatives from Republicans and Democrat Abroad, Sir Robert Worcester, founder of MORI will moderate.  Tickets for both events are £8 (£5 friends and concessions) and include a reception.

For more information and to book please contact the Benjamin Franklin House at +44 (0)207 839 6006 or info@benjaminfranklinhouse.org

A New Prize for Nonprofit Collaboration

Are you a nonprofit in the U.S. or do you know of a nonprofit in the U.S. which is a great collaborator?

We recently read about a new prize created by The Lodestar Foundation (Phoenix, Arizona, USA) and wanted to help spread the news. The Collaboration Prize is designed to recognize and celebrate the spirit of cooperation, not competition, in the nonprofit sector - a very worthy goal. $250,000 USD will be awarded to two or more nonprofits that have united programs, services, and resources to achieve the greatest community impact and most exceptional business efficiencies.

Nominations for the inaugural prize are open until 5 p.m. EDT on July 21, 2008; visit www.thecollaborationprize.org for details.

Tell ammado what you care about

We know that being a member of ammado means that you care, so we want to find out what you care about. To do this, ammado has launched an online video campaign to gather the opinions and thoughts of our global community. We are trying to collect as many video clips of people sharing with us what it is they care about and will share these clips with our community by broadcasting them from our site.

As we may not reach some of you, this is your chance to have your say!

Simply tell us in a short video recording (a minute or less), who you are, where you are from and what you care about. It’s that easy.

It could be the work you or your organisation does, the causes you believe in, anything or anyone you feel passionate about or a list of things you want to change in your community or country.

So have your say, record it and email it to us at: video@ammado.com

All video clips will then be viewable from our site in June 2008.

We cannot accept files larger than 3MB and footage will be checked by ammado for suitability for broadcast.

Linking to your profile to maximise reach

Say you’re running an effective, energetic NGO and you’ve taken the key step in leveraging your web activities by joining your organisation up to ammado.  You’re taking advantage of the wealth of features that you can use for free on ammado, such as uploading news articles, photos and videos; engaging your supporter base through petitions, campaigns, communities and a new channel to accept donations; connecting with other organisations on the ammado platform, seeking out synergies and new partnerships… all’s well and good.

Meanwhile, back on your own website, you’ve neglected to publicise your ammado profile meaning the benefits of being on the platform are being restricted by one-way traffic. One solution is to place a dedicated page on your homesite publicising your ammado profile, just as Big Heart Humanitarian has done.  A United States-based child advocacy group focused on helping children in the developing world  fund their education, BHH is supplementing their simple blog homesite with an ammado profile, and with ammado’s widget facility can enlist it’s supporters across the web to promote it’s ammado profile and drive still more traffic to its site. It’s also a great idea to put the widget on your own home page.

So to recap, once you’re on ammado, remember to update your own site linking back to your ammado profile in order to maximise its reach and effectiveness.

Asia Pacific Forum follow-up

ammado was a particpant earlier this year at the inaugural Asia Pacific Forum in Perth. Staged by the Fundraising Insititute of Australia, on the eve of its NEWFrontiers: 31st International Fundraising Conference, the event brought together leading fundraisers in the nonprofit sector from all over the world to Perth to address issues facing nonprofits in the Asia Pacific region. These included:

  • trends in philanthropy in Australia, where in 2007 there were AUD$11 billion in gifts made to over 600 philanthropic trusts.
  • boosting investment in capacity building, knowledge and information management of nonprofits
  • need for a better evidence base and better metrics for measuring the social impact of the nonprofit sector

The FIA has now released the resolutions to come out of the forum, including the call that a common information portal be developed for the benefit of the regional fundraising community, which ammado proposed and supported at the forum.

Social Networking, Identity and Frameworks

What’s a social networking site? Loosely, it seems to be a website where people can meet each other based on some common interest or common relationship and begin communicating. Sites that could be called social networking include Last.fm, LinkedIn and Facebook for example. Last.fm allows you to meet people who share similar musical interests. LinkedIn allows you to meet people who share similar contacts. Facebook is more general and allows you to meet people through many different connections.
